The new kerbside collection service
The provision of this new kerbside collection service will help to address our priorities of:
- Increasing reuse and recycling and reducing overall waste.
- Delivering an efficient and cost-effective waste management service.
- Tackling the climate emergency and protecting our environment.
The service will provide easier recycling for householders to understand. There is more container capacity so residents can recycle more. It is easier to move bins around rather than picking up boxes which is beneficial to both the residents and crews. Lastly we will have a smaller fleet of collection vehicles which means a lower impact on climate change.
Alternating Weekly Collections (AWC)
The use of alternating weekly collections (AWC)of recyclables using wheeled bins for the materials is seen in a number of high performing English Councils, including 4 of the top 5 recycling authorities in 2020. These Councils all achieved recycling rates in excess of 63%.
Figure 1 shows how the recycling collections will happen.
Under the new collection system, the available capacity for recyclables will increase from 220L/fortnight under the current box scheme to up to 360L/fortnight, more than doubling the space available making it easier to recycle more.
The use of a “twin stream” system, where paper and cardboard are placed in one wheeled bin and other recyclables placed in the other means that it will be easier to understand what materials can go in which container making it simpler to recycle more. See below which materials will be collected in which container (Figure 2)
New service rollout
The new service containers are being delivered to households one round at a time between February and November 2022. The roll out will be led by CWR and our distribution partner JETT.
The roll out plan will see around 12,000 households a month on average receiving their new containers alongside a full printed information pack which will include bin stickers and instructions on what needs to be placed in each container.
The delivery of the new bins and accompanying information pace is due to start in your area. The majority of customers will receive 2 new larger recycling wheeled bins to facilitate a move from a weekly to a fortnightly collection.
There will be exceptions to the new service for those properties unable to accommodate the new containers. These properties will continue to use recycling boxes but will be advised that the materials in each container will change to be the same as the new bin service. These customers will receive a separate communication setting out their arrangement. Some of these communications may result in an increase in contacts.
Beeston is programmed for late February / March 2022
